Communications: 10 guiding principles and 1 practice

Here are a few guiding principles on communications (surely more, here are some):

  1. Every touch point should have purpose.

  2. Purpose can be informational, educational, inspirational, and/or relational.

  3. Content should be intentional, down to each word or gif. Ask: will the recipient know “what’s in this for me?”

  4. Vary format and meet people where they are, knowing people are at different places. Some appreciate long form. Others: TL;DR. Read, watch, or listen.

  5. 1-to-1 AND 1-to-Many.

  6. Push AND Pull.

  7. Once upon a time… tell a story. Stories are memorable and break through. And, be human and real. Tone matters. We are not robots (which also means, we might not always get it right. That’s OK.)

  8. You have to repeat something 7 times before it lands.

  9. You have to repeat something 7 times before it lands.

  10. You have to…

A practice:

Before speaking or clicking “send,” ask:

  1. What is MY motivation here?

  2. How will it be received?

Bonus: assess and improve. How was it received?

Every touch point is an opportunity to be intentional. To “touch” with pointedness. This is important, because words are powerful.
